The ladies of the Twentieth Century Literary Club enjoyed a delightful evening on Jan. 19 as they shared a special movie night at the home of Pam Ames. Co-hostess Linda Williams added much to the lovely evening. Following the theme of “The Soul of the South,” the evening centered around the best seller book “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett. The lovely Ames home was the perfect setting for the night.

Program chair for the night, Lavenia Carter, began with a club competition of listing double names, a tradition frequently found in the South. The “Miss Julia” book series by Ann B. Ross was recommended to club members who enjoy reading Southern, Fanny Flagg style books; this series has been well received. Lavenia shared an essay written by Kathryn Stockett found in the anthology, “The Best Advice I Ever Got: Lessons From Extraordinary Lives,” detailing Stockett’s attempts to find a publisher for “The Help.” She received 60 rejections of her novel, but on the 61st attempt, the book was accepted by agent Susan Ramer. Stockett’s perseverance resulted in a best seller that proved to be a wonderful reading experience for millions of people.
