Report: Impaired motorist runs down mailboxes
ENGLEWOOD — Officials say a local man’s blood-alcohol content was double the legal limit Sunday when he allegedly drove his pickup truck over several mailboxes in his Roberta Drive neighborhood. Edward Joseph Baumgartner, 69, 6000 block of Roberta Drive, was charged Sunday with seven counts of DUI with property damage and one count of DUI with injury, the Florida Highway Patrol reported. Troopers say residents in a Roberta Drive neighborhood observed Baumgartner behind the wheel of a black Nissan truck Sunday afternoon when the vehicle allegedly plowed over four mailboxes in the area. One of the witnesses also saw Baumgartner allegedly hit two bicycles that were lying in a nearby yard with his truck. No one was on the bikes at the time. He also allegedly struck and damaged a stop sign, troopers say. The truck came to rest in some bushes near the corner of Roberta Drive and Bond Street, a report states. Charlotte County Sheriff’s deputies were among the first on the scene. They reportedly told troopers that Baumgartner was attempting to move the truck out from the bushes. An injured passenger was found hiding in the bushes, officials say. He was taken by ambulance to Fawcett Memorial Hospital. His condition was not known Monday. Troopers allegedly detected a strong odor of alcohol emitting from Baumgartner. He was taken to the Charlotte County Jail where multiple breath tests were administered. In all four samples, Baumgartner’s blood-alcohol content was greater than .18, a report states. The legal limit to drive is .08. Baumgartner was released Sunday on $8,000 bond.
