Big ray still swimming free

I’ve had several people ask me questions about the stingray that was featured on last week’s cover. Mostly, people seemed to want to know what happened after the photo. I contacted Ryan Boley, who sent in the photo, and got the rest of the story.
“We were fishing from a jon boat,” he says, “and that was the second big ray we caught that day. We couldn’t stop it with the Shimano and that Star rod, so we pulled anchor and went on a ride. It must have pulled us about a mile. Every time it would lay down on the bottom we thought it was done, but when we would catch up it would take off again. Every one of those boys was plum wore out. The fish ended up pulling us in a circle, and when we got in the really shallow water over by Cape Haze I knew we had it.”
