It’s about that time of year — the time when I
start working the bridges and docks for tasty sheepshead. Although these fish are known to
be masters bait-stealers, with a little practice and the right gear you can limit out quickly from your kayak.
I’ve found that the best way to target them is to go simple. By this, I mean take the bare minimum of gear — extra rods and drifting bait buckets will only be in your way. You’ll need light or medium spinning rod with 20-pound braided line and 30 inches or so of 20-pound mono leader tied to a No. 1 light wire hook. For sinkers, I use quarter- and half-ounce splitshots — they make it easy to adjust the weight to the current.
