The 6th annual John Schudel Memorial Tournament played out Saturday at DeSoto County High School. The event brings 21 Florida academic teams to DeSoto County for a Jeopardy-style contest. Some 16 schools and 86 competitors participated in the all-day round-robin at DeSoto High.
“Every year I am inexpressibly grateful to those who contributed. This memorial tribute to John Schudel would not have succeeded without you, and thank you to all,” said Andrew Hagen, DeSoto High’s Academic Team coach and an organizer.
Hagen wished to recognize readers and score-keepers: Anna Springer, Blaine Wallace, Jill Maassen, Gloria Montoya-Vazquez, Larry Bailey, Carolyn Crews, John Bois, Grace Morrell, Tim Schomburg, Judy Kirkpatrick, Ray Klejmont, Karen Privitello, Juan Perez, Aaron Lakus, Glenn Schudel, Alex Reichley, Grace Martin, Patricia Carcamo, Jesse Shattuck, Chloe Rachel, Pat Schudel, Jerry Waters, Linda Waters, Maggie Glucklich and Sergio Villafuerte
Special thanks to: Speaker and schools Supt. Adrian Cline, for addressing the tournament in memory of John Schudel, and for contributing to the improvement of the tournament. Martin Glucklich and the culinary kids for producing spectacular Ziti for lunch. Alan Cespedes for preparing all the Chromebooks. Troy Row for preparing the building. And also to Hazel Myers, Jill Maassen, Nina Loucks, Amber Azbill, Tim Schomburg, Melissa Spencer, Chad Mansfield, Gloria Orozco, Trey Hill, Julie Chidsey, and Eva Rose Spires for the use of their rooms.
There were 86 competitors, 21 teams from 13 schools: Community School of Naples, 1st. The DeSoto teams included Elayna Reichley, Max Montoya-Vazquez, Kaleb Kent, Anthony Petro, Sun Fardeen, Kaleb Thomas, Mariaceleste Hernandez, Vanessa Arias, Joe Springer. All incredible kids!
