Experts with NOAA said the Gulf Coast, including Charlotte, Sarasota and Manatee counties, will experience an intensification of red tide over the next 36 hours.Â
ENGLEWOOD - The National Weather Service out of Tampa Bay issued a warning about red tide for Charlotte, Sarasota and Manatee counties early Wednesday.Â
Over the next 36 hours, (NOAA) is forecasting a high risk of respiratory irritation from Karenia brevis (red tide) at some beaches in Charlotte, Manatee and Sarasota counties," it said in a social media post. "Conditions may vary."
Red tide algae is natural to the Gulf in concentrations less than 1,000 cells per liter of water.
When the algae concentration rises to more than 100,000 cells, people can develop coughs and other respiratory ailments from airborne toxins.
More than 1 million cells per liter can lead to fish kills and the death of other marine life, including manatees and other marine mammals.
"A moderate to high risk of respiratory irritation is most likely when winds are blowing onshore or alongshore, and less likely when winds are blowing offshore," the social media post stated.
