It was a tough way for the DeSoto County boys soccer team to open their season. They were on the road at Charlotte and lost the opener on a goal with less than 30 seconds left in the game, 2-1.

After a scoreless half, Cesar Maldonado found the back of the net less than a minute into the second half. That goal was his first goal in high school.

“I was proud of my team even though we didn’t win. We had a good fight but it was the little mistakes that hurt us,” said Maldonado.

It took the Tarpons 11 minutes to tie the game at one apiece, and with just under 30 seconds left to play, they scored the game-winner.

Bulldog coach Arturo Vargas said, “That was a tough game. They kept coming back and finally scored. That’s soccer for you. We’re a young team with 12 or 13 freshmen and haven’t played together. We’ve only had a couple weeks of practice. For being our first game we did really good.”
