Isabella Coogan

Port Charlotte cross-country runner

This week’s Sun Preps Female Athlete of the Week goes to Port Charlotte High cross-country runner Isabella Coogan, who becomes the first athlete to be selected twice this season.

Coogan, a senior, has been one of the superior runners in the area all season, winning Districts and finishing high at Regionals to earn a trip to the state meet in Tallahassee on Saturday.

Coogan finished fourth at Regionals, held on Saturday in Punta Gorda, with a time of 18:57.3.

The senior Lady Pirate is poised for a strong performance this Saturday at the state meet, after a consistent and productive season this past fall.

“She’s killing it,” Port Charlotte coach Stefany Sanchez said. “A runner like her is not something that comes through all the time, and it’s been beautiful to watch.”

John Perez

Port Charlotte cross-country runner

This week’s Sun Preps Male Athlete of the Week is Port Charlotte cross-country runner John Perez.

Perez is making his second trip to Tallahassee to compete in the state meet. Last season he finished 19th overall.

Perez had a strong finish at districts and then finished eighth at Saturday’s Region meet in Punta Gorda with a time of 16:33.9.

Perez hopes to continue his strong senior season with a top 10 finish at states.

“I couldn’t pick anyone more deserving of that honor,” Port Charlotte coach Ray Chumbley said. “I’m excited for him and very proud of everything he’s accomplished all four years he’s been here.”
