Becky Davis and Jacob Smith closed out their Charlotte Tarpon golfing careers Wednesday in the FHSAA 3A State tournament at the Mission Inn and Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills.

Smith, who carded an opening round 84, matched that total Wednesday to finish in a tie for 70th, 24-over par.

“It was a really nice experience,” said Scott Harvey, Charlotte Tarpons boys golf coach. “It was great to be able to share that time with my buddy Coach Hoffart, Becky and Jacob and their families.”

Davis, who shot an 87 on Tuesday, carded an 85 on Wednesday to finish in 58th place, 28-over par.

“It was a tough day to start, but a strong finish,” said Josh Hoffart, Charlotte Tarpons girls golf coach, when recounting Davis’ first round. “Becky was 11 over-par on the front nine and for a variety of reasons. If one part of her game was on, the other part was struggling.”

The challenging course and the pressure of the tournament itself were less than desirable variables that Davis found herself having to contend with.

“Position was great on a lot of shots, but the execution missed the mark at times,” said Hoffart. “She found her rhythm on the back though...she started with a double (bogey) on 10, but finished 2-over (par) on her final eight holes.”

Davis finished the first round with four consecutive pars.
