The Charlotte County powers-that-be hosted the “One Charlotte, One Water Assembly” last week at the Cultural Center of Charlotte County. The nine general objectives were clearing outlined, but those nine tiny bullet points couldn’t disguise the magnitude of the words.

“Improved water quality” means so many different things to everyone. The definition will likely be different for parents filling the bathtub to bathe squirmy kids, the fisherman checking his blue crab traps, a jogger stopping at a local water fountain, restaurant owners filling water pitchers, orange grove managers tending the trees, the tourists wading along the harbor or into the Gulf of Mexico, waterfront home owners enjoying their docks … or anyone who turns on a tap to get a drink of water.

Salt water and fresh water. Potable water and non-potable water. That’s a whole lot of h2o to talk about.

Scott Berry, director of Policy and Government Affairs for the U.S. Water Alliance, reminded the assembly attendees that there are many people who take that last little action for granted most of the time. In the United States, we can turn on a tap anywhere and get a clean, safe drink of water. That is pretty remarkable when you stop to think. (Which we do think about during those rare times of short-lived outages.)

Discussions regarding the next steps and actions needed to improving our water quality will continue. Hopefully, they will continue forever.
