ENGLEWOOD — The Englewood Under Armour Under the Lights youth flag football organization is nearing the end of its signups period for the winter season. Signups end Friday, and the organization only has 74 players signed up so far.

“Right now, we only have enough players for about 2½ teams for both divisions,” said director Greg Truisi. “A few who signed up earlier dropped out. Apparently, the reason we haven’t had many players sign up is because of the cost of the Under Armour program and also because it’s close to Christmas and people may not enough money.”

According to Truisi, there is a possibility the local board may drop from the Under Armour program and establish a league themselves, possibly at a lower cost.

The flag league is co-ed and open to youths in kindergarten to the eighth grade. Parents can sign up players at uaflag.com. Just locate Florida/Englewood league. They also can sign up on Facebook.

If the league goes on, it’s scheduled to begin in early January. The games, which are scheduled to be played at Larry Nichol Field at Ann Dever Regional Park on San Casa Drive, will be played every Friday night from from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The regular season will last until Feb. 22. Playoffs will be March 1, when the championship games in each division will be played.

There will be a seven-game season plus playoffs or consolation games. There will be nine-player rosters for each team.
