NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER EVENTS
Punta Gorda: The 70th annual National Day of Prayer will be observed at a non-denominational prayer service at noon May 6 in front of the Punta Gorda City Hall Annex. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held in the City Hall garage.
North Port: Trinity United Methodist Church in North Port, 4285 Wesley Lane, will gather at their flagpole at noon May 6. The church will provide seating. Masks are recommended. The service will last a little over an hour and includes: North Port Mayor Jill Luke, Deacon Rich from the Diocese of Venice, and Trinity United Methodist Church’s Pastor Danny Chronister. This is an ecumenical event for communities to gather and join together for healing.
Venice: A National Day of Prayer ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. May 6 at the downtown Venice Centennial Park Gazebo. The event is free and features patriotic music and prayers by church leaders. Lawn seating is available; residents should bring their own chairs. Social distancing and masks are required.
Guided meditationDhamma discussion and meditation with Tahn Khema is 1 p.m. Saturdays, (today, May 8, May 15 and May 22, at Sarasota Forest Monastery, at the end of Lewis Street off Old Englewood Road, Englewood. The program is in English and typically takes about 90 minutes to two hours. Anyone who wishes to attend a live guided meditation outdoors may join in. Members will put up signs directing attendees to the location. Bring a seat if you like. The monastery has some wooden platforms and perhaps some woven mats on the ground available.

Christ Community United Methodist Church Thrift Store, 27000 Sunnybrook Road, Harbour Heights, is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Closet of Hope at Gulf Cove United Methodist Church, 1100 S. McCall Road in Port Charlotte, offers free clothing for children and adults of all ages. The closet is open from 9:30 a.m. to noon every Saturday. Individuals must present a photo ID at the door which reflects their residence in Charlotte County or in Englewood, North Port or Venice in Sarasota County. Please wear a mask. Clothing donations are accepted when the Closet is open.
