Events coming for Smokey's 75th birthday

Smokey Bear stopped by Wednesday’s City Council meeting in Punta Gorda to receive a proclamation for Smokey Bear Day, set for Aug. 9.

On that day, Smokey will celebrate his 75th birthday, making his wildlife prevention campaign the longest running public service campaign in U.S. history, according to the city’s documents.

The Charlotte County Sports Complex in Port Charlotte is hosting a scavenger hunt and other activities from 2-5 p.m. to celebrate Smokey.

Smokey will also be throwing out the first pitch of the ballgame that day.
