North Port youth wrestlers

NORTH PORT — The North Port High School and youth wrestling teams are planning a tournament on Aug. 28 and they’re hoping to gain some new fans at the matches.

The Alpha Authentics Fall Series Qualifier is a tournament for wrestlers in kindergarten through 12th grade.

“Our youth wrestling club that the high school kids help train for the next generation of wrestlers are really excited about the tournament,” said Adam Donatelle, father of Vincent, a state placer on the team going into 10th grade.

There is no spectator fee, but donations are appreciated. Sealed drinks and snacks will be available for purchase.

“We hope people will come out and show some support for youth athletes in our community,” said coach Coach Eugene Hill. “These kids work very hard and it would be encouraging if people show up and cheer for them.”

All sales benefit North Port wrestling and will help cover the cost of uniforms, travel and equipment.

Hill said the team has to pay referee fees for all of the tournaments, which can cost up to $2,000.

“Sometimes the tournament itself can cost around $300,” he said. “If we have 20 of those a year, that’s more than $5,000 just for tournament fees.”

The tournament will be held at the high school, 6400 W. Price Blvd., North Port. Start time is 9 a.m. for the youth wrestlers, and 11 a.m. for high school wrestling.
