OKEECHOBEE — One Rotonda West resident was killed while a second critically injured in a crash that also killed a Melbourne, Fla. resident and critically injured a fourth person involved.
The wreck was at 2:10 p.m. Monday about 10 miles east of Okeechobee along State Road 70, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
According to a news release, a 65-year-old Melbourne woman was driving a sports utility vehicle eastbound on SR 70 while a 72-year-old Rotonda West woman was westbound on the highway.
“Vehicle 1 attempted to pass slower moving eastbound traffic by entering the westbound lane of State Road 70,” the news release stated. “The front of Vehicle 1 collided with the front of Vehicle 2 within the westbound travel lane.”
Both drivers, the Melbourne woman and a 72-year-old Rotonda West woman, suffered critical injuries.
Both passengers in the vehicles, a 68-year-old Melbourne man in the first vehicle and a 68-year-old Rotonda West man in the second vehicle, were killed in the collision.
Florida Highway Patrol no longer gives information on names for people involved in wrecks due to Marsy’s Law.
All were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. An investigation into the crash continues.
