A 15-year-old suspect was arrested last week in connection with a string of vehicle burglaries, as well as two vehicle thefts, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office reported. The male teen was arrested on Nov. 7, and detectives are still working to identify his accomplice.

Deputies responded to Mauritania Road in Deep Creek on Oct. 26 for a report of a stolen vehicle. The victim reported her 1999 white Ford Ranger was stolen from her property. Several burglaries to unlocked vehicles were also reported in the same area during the time frame of the theft.

Deputies received a second call for a vehicle stolen from Tarpon Way in Punta Gorda the same day, according to a press release. The victims reported their maroon Scion was stolen from their property during the evening or early morning hours.

Security footage from a Deep Creek residence was posted to CCSO social media, leading to both vehicles being found by a witness in the Ranchettes area of Punta Gorda on Oct. 27. The CCSO Forensic unit processed both vehicles and used evidence collected to identify the suspect.

During an interview with his mother, sandals found in one of the stolen vehicles were identified as his, according to CCSO. They were reportedly labeled with his release date from a previous arrest. The suspect was eventually found hiding in a neighbor’s garage, according to CCSO.

He was transported to a district office where he provided a statement before being charged with two counts of grand theft of a motor vehicle, burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, grand theft more than $300 but less than $5,000, and petty theft. Detectives are searching for his accomplice, and anyone with information is asked to contact CCSO or Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers.
