Hopefully plenty of Englewood, Venice and North Port bus riders showed up for public meetings this week to speak on proposed changes to SCAT bus routes.

While we certainly can understand wanting to save a couple hundred thousand dollars, the ideas being floated by Sarasota County Area Transit appear to be detrimental to locals. People who rely on the bus service to get to jobs, for shopping trips, access the airport and/or just to enjoy downtown Sarasota could face a hardship if the ideas are approved.

The changes will not be approved easily. Sarasota county commissioners will have to weigh in. And, a Federal Transit Authority equity analysis must be completed — along with the required public input which was scheduled Tuesday and Wednesday in North Port and Venice.

SCAT wants to eliminate three routes to save money. They include:

• Route 100X which is an express route between North Port and downtown Sarasota and the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.

• Route 13 in Venice and South Venice would be eliminated and changed to Route 23 serving the Venice Island Loop.

• And, Route 18 that serves downtown Sarasota and Longboat Key Bay Isles may be eliminated — along with changing serves times to Saturday service times to Sunday’s schedule.

As SCAT awaits word on a possible privatization, we hope all options are considered along with the needs of its passengers.
