Editor:

I would like to speak with anyone who has family locked up in Charlotte County Jail regarding forming a civilian oversight committee for that facility.

According to Florida Department of Health the facility is allowed to function without any government oversight. I am offended at the thought of a system profiting off human suffering but allowing them to operate with autonomy is indefensible! The filthy, disgusting condition of the public restrooms in the main lobby of the jail give a clue to the conditions our loved ones are forced to live in.

A volunteer civilian oversight committee made up of family members and whoever runs the jail is necessary to ensuring sanitary conditions for our loved ones, especially in the face of the high rates of communicable infections among the incarcerated. Please contact me at levangiesix@aol.com if you are interested in forming such a community-run committee. Let's work together to rehabilitate this broken correctional system.
