Time to put brakes on Charlotte development
I just noticed the other day in the paper that a parcel of land on Burnt Store Road has been rezoned from a density of 32 approved building lots, to over 1,000 lots. This is not the first time in the past year that these types of zoning changes have taken place.
There is a new 200-plus unit RV park going in on Taylor Road at Burnt Store. Heritage Landing is growing by leaps and bounds. There is a high end motor home park going in further down Burnt Store Road. There is a 1,500-plus home development going in at the Tuckers Grade exit on I-75 and on and on. While many seem concerned about the height of buildings in downtown Punta Gorda, they seem to be missing these development changes, that most of us, if asked, would be opposed to.
There appears to be a bias on the part of local city and county government in favor of developers. Zoning changes like this as well as the county’s failure to charge the maximum allowable impact fees, sends the message that development is a good thing and something to be encouraged. If like me, you don’t share that view, it’s time for you to let your council person and/or commissioner know. Remember Joni Mitchell’s caution that “ they paved paradise and put up a parking lot”
