Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office deputies took into custody the man they say attempted to drown a K-9 after running from cops on Nov. 4.

Matthew Johnson, 37, reportedly took one Mike’s Hard Lemonade, one quart of chocolate milk, and one package of Hostess Ding Dongs from the 7-Eleven at 3362 Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte. The clerk called law enforcement, who attempted to detain Johnson, but he took off on his bicycle down Harbor Boulevard.

K-9 Sparta attempted to restrain Johnson, but Johnson allegedly pulled the dog into a nearby canal and struck him on the head, forcing Sparta to release his bite. He then swam across the canal and evaded the deputies. He was found and arrested on Nov. 26, charged with offense against a police dog, resisting an officer without violence, petty theft, and violation of probation.
