In 1896, the Nichols Brothers filed the plat for Englewood, a town of 
13 square miles. At that point in time it was located in a sparsely populated corner of Manatee County.

Native American Indian mounds or middens are prevalent in the Englewood area. Most are huge prehistoric refuse piles, mainly full of shell fish remains, fish and animal bones, although some have been found to contain human remains, such as at Indian Mound Park and Cedar Point Park.
