ENGLEWOOD — The Englewood Panthers and Bobcats lost to host Cape Junior in Pop Warner football action Saturday.
The Junor Varsity Panthers fell to the host 26-12, but had a chance to tie or win the game in the late stages with the score 19-12.
“We drove down toward their goal line, but had an incomplete pass that ended the drive,” said Panthers head coach Lonne Moore. “Then they (Cape Junior) had a late touchdown.”
Carson Moore and Caleb Whitmore scored the Cats’ touchdowns. Moore scored on a 13-yard run and Whitmore scored on a 3-yard run.
“We moved the ball well,” coach Moore said. “We just made some mistakes. We had the ball inside their red zone three times but couldn’t put the ball into the end zone.”
Carson Moore and Whitmore made big plays on defense and Landon Wagenseil recovered a fumble for the Panthers.
The Panthers are 1-1 in division play and 1-3 overall. The game with Cape Junior was not a division game. They can still make the conference playoffs. The Cats will host the Fort Myers Firecats Saturday and conclude the regular season at Lehigh Oct. 18. Both are division games.
“If we win one game, we might make the playoffs,” Moore said. “If we win both we definitely will.”
Last week, the Panthers scored on an intercepted pass to beat the Charlotte Warriors 18-12. In the last two games, they’ve shown they can be competitive after a slow start to the season.
The Mitey Mites division Bobcats fell to the hosts 19-0. Although they are winless, it was the closest game they’ve played this season.
“We had a good game,” said Bobcats head coach Greg Truisi. “We played well on both defense and offense, especially defense.”
Truisi praised the play of Talon Truisi, Tony Paniaqua and Jayden Hammond on defense.
