Arland R. Meade, a long-time resident of Floral Lakes in Bartow, celebrated his 103rd birthday on Oct. 23.
“He remains sharp of mind, quick of wit, and interested in everything and everyone,” his son, Thomas, reported.
He served as a cryptographer in the Army Air Corps in World War II, and after the war held positions in government, commercial and academic assignments in publications.
He retired as professor emeritus of journalism at the University of Connecticut.
He has published an autobiography, a book of more than 100 letters to the editor published by several newspapers, and a history of Phi Kappa Phi, his academic fraternity.
Meade has also won more than 200 medals in the Polk Senior Games.
His wife, Beth, died in 2011. He has three children, Thomas, Charles, and Melody.
