BARTOW – Bartow City Commissioners proclaimed September to be Multicultural Awareness Month, also to celebrate the annual Diversity Luncheon.

The luncheon is scheduled at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at the Bartow Civic Center. The Diversity Award for business or organization and Diversity Award for an individual over the last year will be named. Tickets for the event cost $12. It is sponsored by the Bartow Community Relations Committee.

“By doing this,” said CRC Co-Chairman Gloria Washington. “We establish relationships that go far beyond your imagination.”

She said the CRC's focus is for people to show care and concern for everyone, even people different from themselves.

Presenting the proclamation was Bartow Mayor Leo Longworth, also a CRC member. He said in his experience the CRC is the “very best with helping us live together.”

At the Diversity Luncheon Superintendent of Schools Jacqueline Byrd is the guest speaker. Byrd has been the superintendent of Polk County Schools since February 2016 making her the first black superintendent in Polk County. She moved to Polk County in 2013 as deputy superintendent.

To order tickets for the event, call the Bartow Area Chamber of Commerce at 863-533-7125 or buy them online at
