North Port hosts a back to School Resource Fair from 8:30-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Morgan Family Community Center, 6207 W. Price Blvd., North Port. “The event will feature 28 exhibitors which will provide a variety of information for families with children, including childcare, healthy living and nutritional information, children activities, mentoring information, educational programs, and more,” the city said. Summer Finale

Free community event

Patrice Weston State Farm Agency Inc., will host a free community event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3, at 1946 Kings Highway, Port Charlotte. Free food, games and back to school supplies. The first 250 students will received a State Farm backpack. All students are invited.

School supplies

AMVETS Post 2000 Ladies Auxiliary is seeking school supplies for Glenallen Elementary School in North Port, including “No. 2 pencils, erasers, crayons, scissors, glue and glue sticks, crayons, color pencils, dry markers, highlighters, supply boxes, pencil bags, rulers, note book papers,” the group said. The school supply drive goes until the first week of August. Those wanting to donate can drop off items at AMVETS Post 2000, 401 Ortiz Blvd., Warm Mineral Springs. Lane closures announced

Intermittent single lane closures will occur on Harborview Road, between Interstate 75 to Sunnybrook Road, from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. until Friday, Aug. 10. The contractor will be milling and resurfacing of the road. Traffic signs and flaggers will be on site as needed to direct traffic. Travelers may experience intermittent, slow moving traffic and/or temporary delays within the project limits and should allow extra time when planning to travel through this area. The Public Works Department reminds motorists to remain alert and use extreme caution when traveling in the vicinity of construction workers.

AMVETS Karaoke

Englewood’s new AMVETS Post 777, 3386 N. Access Road, sponsors Karaoke Night with pizza at 6 p.m. each Monday. The only exception is the second Monday, which is the group’s monthly meeting. The Englewood Coast Guard Auxiliary, 1929 Englewood Road (State Road 776), has life jackets for lending. Grandkids coming into town? Your own kids got bigger? Stop by and borrow one or more for free, courtesy of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Sea Tow Foundation. Life jackets are available in all sizes, 24-7 in a rack front of the building. Arts in August

Art Center

The North Port Art Center is raffling tickets for a suite — including include 12 tickets, to a 2019 Charlotte Stone Crabs baseball game. New wildlife platform

The new wildlife observation platform is now open at Bill Coy Preserve, 5350 Placida Road, Englewood. The platform is strategically placed to provide views over both Lemon Bay and the pine flatwoods located throughout the park. To access the platform take the northern most trailhead from the main parking lot west to the end of the trail.

LLI presents Britain’s Bloodiest Dynasty

Out of the chaos, darkness, and violence of the Middle Ages, one family rose to seize control of England. Generation after generation, they ruled the country for more than 300 years. Back Pack Angels

The North Port Coalition for Homeless/Needy Children aka Back Pack Angels remains busy. The group packs and delivers bags of hygiene products to North Port schools and social agencies. During the summer months, it continues to deliver hygiene products to pre-schools. In May, the organization packed and delivered more than 800 bags. Rotonda blood drive

The GFWC Rotonda West Woman’s Club will sponsor a OneBlood Drive on the Big Red Bus from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 9 in the parking lot of the Rotonda West Community Center, 646 Rotonda Circle, Rotonda West Florida.

Be a Summer Hero and donate a pint of blood to help save up to three lives. Blood donors are especially needed in this area during the summertime. You must be 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and bring a form of identification. You will receive a free Beach Towel and a wellness checkup, including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, iron count and cholesterol screening.

Art in Public Places reception

Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 9400 Indian Spring Cemetery Road, Punta Gorda, will host “Wild and Natural” Florida as part of the next Art in Public Places reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 2.
