NORTH PORT — The driver who crashed his van into a home on Cranberry Boulevard on Wednesday had been involved in an earlier hit-and-run, police said Thursday.
Patrol units from the North Port Police Department were dispatched Wednesday to the area near Walmart on Tamiami Trail for a hit-and-run crash, city spokesperson Josh Taylor said.
Not long after, the same suspect vehicle crashed into a home a few miles away on Cranberry Boulevard and Lemay Lane, injuring the driver, Taylor said. A person in the home was not injured.
The man was airlifted by helicopter to a trauma hospital due to the extent of his injuries. He is expected to survive, Taylor said.
While investigating the second crash, officers discovered a stolen TV from Walmart in the van.
Police are conducting a preliminary traffic homicide investigation based on the serious bodily injury of the driver. Investigations are also ongoing from the Walmart theft, the hit-and-run crash, and the crash into the home, Taylor said.
Police did not release the man’s name.
Taylor added it is not clear if impairment was a factor, nor if the driver is from North Port or just passing through.
