North Port sisters Averiella Connor, 10, and Delaynah LaRue, 11, who have been Girl Scouts for six years, decided they wanted to do a project to help promote literacy.

The girls decided to build a “Little Free Library” at Blue Ridge Park, North Port. The girls obtained donations of paint an concrete from Home Depot and lumber and hardware from Lowe’s, and help from a family friend, Patrick Flynn. They got some design and construction help. The almost 40 books available came from a collection from family and friends.

The project took them approximately eight hours, and the held a ribbon-cutting ceremony ton Saturday. After the ceremony, attendees were treated to popsicles and coloring.

Little Libraries are popping up across the country, as ways for people to borrow books on the honor system, and replenish the book supply with donated materials.
