LAKE PLACID – High school soccer season has officially arrived. The Lake Placid Green Dragons played in their first match of the preseason against the DeSoto Bulldogs. Lake Placid took an early lead and defeated DeSoto by a score of 3-2 on Thursday night at Roger Scarborough Memorial Field.
“I thought it was a good effort from the boys,” said Lake Placid Coach Alix Jolicoeur. “We need to work on spreading the ball, our diet and fitness because towards the end the fatigue set in and a lot of cramping was going on. We have been training and this team knows each other and they get along. We need to incorporate that on the pitch and thus far we are looking good.”
In the first half, DeSoto goalie Salvador Altamirano came out to grab the ball from Lake Placid’s Rudy Perez, but Perez shot the ball past him and into the back of the net for the first goal of the game for a 1-0 lead with 16:37 left in the first half.
Lake Placid’s Alejandro “Gordo” Villagomez led the team with six shots on goal and 3 assists for the night.
“I think we need to put more work in,” said Villagomez. “We need to communicate and not lose the ball as much as we did. We need to spread the ball out and make the opponents chase for it. I opened up so my teammates would have the opportunity to pass the ball to me and tried to spread the ball out to everybody and play as a team. We are a great team and we have a lot to accomplish this year. This is my senior year and I have accomplished a lot in the last four years and I want to accomplish something different this year. I want to help the players, they are my friends. Our coach is great and puts in a lot of time for us and I hope we accomplish something big with him because he deserves it. We are going to work hard to fix the little errors that we committed tonight to get ready for the next game.”
The action picked up in the second half. DeSoto’s Jade Merlo took a shot on goal that was just out of the reach of Green Dragon keeper Oscar Resendiz and into the back of the net to tie the match at 1 with 28:01 left in the match.
Lake Placid scored off a corner kick from Villagomez that Perez headed past the Bulldog goalie for a 2-1 advantage with 17:16 remaining to play. Perez had a pair of shots on goal.
Lake Placid took advantage of another corner kick by Villagomez that Sam Troutman headed in for a 3-1 lead for the Green Dragons with 9:00 left to play.
DeSoto tried to rally with Merlo finding the back of the net once again cutting the deficit to 3-2 with 4:31 remaining.
Lake Placid was able to control the action and held on for the 3-2 victory.
“I thought they played much better at the end of the first half,” Jolicoeur said. “In the second half they gave up a little bit and you could see the fatigue settle in. A lot of players were walking and we gave up a goal as a result. Overall this is just our first game and there are some things that we need to work on. Alejandro Villagomez stood out to me. Even though he did not score, he did have many assists, he had many chances and took a few shots on goal. Julian Hernandez this is not the first time he was in this position but it is the first time I have seen him play it correctly.”
Lake Placid will have its first regular season match at home on Tuesday night against Tenoroc at Roger Scarborough Memorial Field.
