AVON PARK — An Avon Park man allegedly convinced an elderly woman to allow him to complete work on her driveway, but after he cashed her check, he never returned, according to a recent arrest report.
On Wednesday, the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office arrested Johnnie Earl Gallegos, 52, of Avon Park and charged him with exploitation of an elderly person with an amount less than $10,000 and larceny less than $10,000 from a person aged 65 years of age or older.
According to the arrest report, in November 2017, Gallegos approached the victim and convinced her to allow him to work on her driveway. At the time he solicited her business, he was working on a job nearby.
Gallegos received a check for $320, which he reportedly cashed. However, he never returned to complete the work, and he has not made any effort to return the money to the victim, the report stated.
The victim was 85 years old at the time the incident occurred. “The suspect has multiple prior convictions for grand theft and has a prior conviction for exploitation of the elderly,” the arrest report stated.
