Charnell V. Barthel, 75, formerly of Defiance, Ohio, passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus at 6:54 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 6, 2018, at her home in Avon Park, Florida. Char was born Dec. 26, 1942 in Bowling Green, Ohio to parents and brothers who never saw her value but still experienced her unconditional love. She spent her entire life caring for others.
She would gladly give her last dollar to a friend in need or drop everything in an instant to help someone. She was the person you could count on to be there in the midst of the storm, no matter the day or time. She never met a stranger and always found positive qualities in every person who crossed her path. She loved easily and fiercely and forgave constantly. Char was a treasure to everyone who knew and loved her.
She worked as the secretary and paraprofessional at the Independence Education Center (formerly St. Michael's SBH) for 30 years, retiring Feb. 1, 2010. She built life-long friendships with her colleagues and touched the hearts and lives of countless troubled youth.
She continues to watch over her husband, Ernest “Skip” A. Barthel II of Avon Park, Florida; her son, Donald L. (Regina) Smith of Defiance, Ohio; her daughter, Tonya M. (Daniel) Robb of Virginia, Minnesota; her stepdaughter, Julie (Chuck) Rustin of Port St. Lucie, Florida; her stepson, Earnest A. (Charlotte) Barthel III (also Skip) of Coolidge, Georgia; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters, nieces and nephews.
All are welcome to join her Celebration of Life at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018 at Avon Park Lakes Baptist Church, 2600 N. Highlands Blvd. in Avon Park, Florida.
Photos and stories of times shared are welcome! In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Conquer Childhood Cancer Now, P.O. Box 126, Defiance, Ohio 43512, which was founded in honor of Char’s great-niece, Tiana Bishop.
