Bill Willson co-organizer of the annual just-for-fun Christmas Golf Car “Not Parade” stands alongside his decorated golf cart at a previous event.

What began six years ago as a fun golf cart parade with three participants has become an annual community event. This year on Friday, December 7 it is expected 15 or more decorated carts will tour the downtown starting around 7:30 p.m. from City Hall along West Venice Avenue to Venice Wine & Coffee at 201 West Venice Avenue and Nokomis Avenue.

The golf cart “not parade” is a just-for-fun parade of golf carts whose owners have decorated them in holiday spirit. Started by Jeannette Gates and Bill Willson who are now joined by Tracy Silver owner of Venice Wine & Coffee.

For fun they decorated their golf carts then drove them along the lighted tree avenues celebrating it as a Christmas community event.

Between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. 15 or more decorated and illuminated golf carts can be seen making their way past Venice City Hall and along West Venice Avenue where they will line-up outside Venice Wine & Coffee.

Some seating is available for spectators who can get into the holiday spirit enjoying wine and more outside or in the store. The highlight of the event begins as invited judges with chosen spectators have fun participating in a contest to select the best decorated cart.

Some carts will have music, all will have lights and this year Willson’s cart will have on the back an illuminated fireplace with Christmas stockings. Following the announcement of the winning cart the owner receives a bottle of wine.

Then the carts will in convoy hold their Christmas Holiday Parade around the lighted and decorated avenues for the public to enjoy this Christmas community annual event.
