Christine Joyce Christine Coker of Venice, Fla., passed away at the age of 84 on Sunday, October 31, 2021, at Tidewell Hospice House in Sarasota. She was born June 27, 1937, to George Emil Jensen and Anne Grosso Jensen, living in Newark, N.J., along with her sister Darlene and brother Kenneth. After attending Seton Hall University, she married John A. Coker in 1956, and they moved from Roselle, N.J., to St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1970.

Joy was a devout Catholic and taught at St. Jude's in St. Petersburg and St. Charles Borromeo in Port Charlotte, before finding a home at Epiphany Cathedral School in Venice, where she taught elementary students for more than twenty years. She was active in the Epiphany parish community for years and took particular joy in participating in Cursillo with her best friend Gigi Murrell.

After a lifetime of raising her own children and teaching everyone else's, Joy retired to spend another decade as her mother's caregiver in St. Petersburg. She finally settled into her own little townhouse in North Venice in 2010 and lived there comfortably with her dogs Maggie and then Mia.

She is survived by her children John E. Coker of Virginia Beach, Va.; Ken Coker of Summerfield, Fla.; Sharyn Bowman of Canton, Ga.; Joanne Mayes of Wharton, Texas; Steve Coker of Sarasota and Gary Coker of Cosby, Tenn., as well as sixteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be held at Epiphany Cathedral on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at noon.
